Warm spring weather brought rodeo fans to Penn Valley for the annual rodeo May 17–19. Rodeo Board President Bob Winters reported an excellent turnout for rodeo weekend, with attendance up from previous years.
“Strong sponsor support allows us to produce a quality rodeo that attracts top professional athletes and rodeo fans to Penn Valley from all over northern California,” Winters said. “The town benefits, our local schools and non-profits benefit, and the foothills community benefits.”
Anticipation was high for rodeo action on Friday and Saturday nights. Families with several generations present enjoyed the country fair atmosphere, listening to the band, dining on BBQ, visiting with friends and watching children romp in high spirits before each performance.
The Grand Entry featured a touching memorial to founding Rodeo Board member, Dayle Baptie, who was represented by a rider-less horse led into the arena by close friend, Dave Summers. Dayle’s Kubota tractor followed, carrying his wife, Diane, and family members.
The 2013 Penn Valley Rodeo Queens were crowned on Friday night. New Rodeo Queen, Erin Maya, and Junior Queen, Kalie Freele, will represent Penn Valley at local events and at rodeos all over the state. Both queens competed in rodeo events on Sunday at the first Community Rodeo Playday, expected to become an annual event.
Along with roping, barrel racing and other rodeo events on Sunday, there were stick horse races and a boot scoot designed to include younger wranglers. Ryan and Sophia Fowler were awarded All Around Cowboy and Cowgirl for the day and received leather breast collars donated by sponsor, Skyline Silversmiths.
“It’s good to see so many young people come out to compete, Winters said. “Our Sunday Rodeo demonstrates we have a lot of talented local youngsters who are the future of rodeo. I especially enjoy watching the mutton busters.”
A Mule Show and Dutch Oven Gathering are scheduled for June 22–23, at the Penn Valley Rodeo Grounds. A Gymkhana Series begins June 8, and the Summer Barrel Racing Series begins June 16, preceded by a Lita Scott Barrel Race Clinic on the 15th.
